Cagayan de Oro City – “Its better to die fighting for the truth, than live doing nothing under the roof of lies” is this year’s theme in the celebration of its foundation 58 years ago.
The Cagayan de Oro Press Club was created and established after fifteen media practitioners of the city joined themselves for one cause, Press Freedom.
As embodied in the country’s constitution, the fifteen practicing media professional of Cagayan de Oro decided to create the club in 1951. Elected President was Virginia Paraiso.
For the past 58 years every member and officer continues to do their vision community work, educational assistance, press freedom celebration and denouncing media killings.
In December 22, 2001 the Cagayan de Oro ratifies the Journalist code of Ethics to be more sensitive and professional in their media profession, The accuracy of their work, its comments and facts, strengthen media advocacy, and honesty.
Personal interest and influence must not be the reason to curtail the tenets of journalism, Attributes the truth source of information to the public. The club rectifies the right to reply and people’s privacy, and campaign against discrimination and to be sensitive for press freedom.
Today (November 11, 2009), as it celebrates its 58 founding year the Cagayan de oro Press Club continues to survive for its membership benefits.
“ A medical mission for our members families, and election forum for the upcoming2010 May election for our members who will covering the nation’s event to protect the integrity of the ballot and campaign for a peaceful and honest election, and simple fellowship to strengthen the camaraderie.” President Vincent Jaudian said.
The Cagayan de Oro Press is now led by its officials led by President Jaudian, Executive vice President Vic Cabanag, VP for Print media Raul Moldez, VP for Broadcast Jonas Bustamante, Secretary Joy Apolinario, Treasurer Bobby Goking, and Auditor Gil Banaag.
The club legislation and policy makers are Board members, Tony Albania, Bingo Alcordo, Herbie Gomez, Uriel Quilinguing, Ernie Balagot, Susan Palmes, Fred Soriano and Don Sanoria.
In this special event, Oath Taking for new members and distribution of Certificate of Membership and Appreciation will also takes place.
“Today is another opportunity for members of the club and the city’s journalists to look back and remember the sacrifices made by media workers and leaders of the past. Collectively, they laid the foundation for the club. Let us honor them by going back to our roots and set our eyes on the future with the directions they have made as our guiding light,” said Herbie Gomez, a past president of the COPC.
