2-M U.S. Dollars Ransom: Gov’t No Way!


Pagadian City – Roughly 100-M (in pesos)ransom has demanded by the kidnappers of Fr. Michael Sinnot, 79 years old, a heart by-pass patient, a Columban Priest who had been 22 days in captivity.

Fr. Sinnot was abducted last Ocotber 11, in the compound of the Columban Missionary here in this city by 3-6 armed suspects after entering the compound unnoticed and escaped riding a white van and when they reach Sta Lucia District proceeded to a waiting motor boat as the suspects ablaze the white van to give authorities a delimna.

The Provincial Government of Zamboanga del Sur under the leadership of Governor Aurora Enerio Cerilles immediately formed a Crisi Management Council to get information where the priest been brought by the suspects try to negotiate for the immediate release of the Hangop ng Kabataan,Inc. founder.

After 22 days in captivity, unknown suspects demanded 2-M dollars ransom for the release of Fr. Mick Sinnot.

As of press time, Mr. Allan Molde, spokemans for the CMC said in a text message that the CMC stand by the government’s policy: No to Ransom demand!

He added that the video was handed to “our law enforcement operatives" and subsequently turned over to the panel. He said the committee convened yesterday to watch and discuss the video.

Molde farther said he was not aware of how the video was handed to law enforcers. "Basically their demand is 2 million dollars. The Philippine government has a no-ransom policy."

He said the video was apparently recorded last Oct. 24. He said Sinnott was holding a newspaper datedOct.22.

“As far as we are concerned, it’s a welcome development... at least Fr. Sinnot is alive and we are very happy for that,"

Meanwhile, the Philippine military who has obtained a copy of a video showing 79-year-old Irish priest Michael Sinnott. Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner, Armed Forces public affairs office chief, however, could not say when the footage was taken or how the military intelligence got hold of the video.

“According to him .the leader of the group that is holding him is Abu Jandal," said Brawner, adding that the priest appeared weak on the video. He said the intelligence community was checking on the background of AbuJandal.

“He (Sinnott) said there is a demand of two million and the ones that took him is Abu Jandal, that is our only information," he added.

Meanwhile, the Western AFP Command under MGen Ben Dolorfino thru its spokesman confirmed the said video and the ransom ask by suspects who until press time were not known, but former news releases said the culprits are lawless elements of the MILF, but they (MILF) denies the accusations.

The military who adopted the same government policy is now contemplating and prepares for an operation to rescue Father Michael Sinnot however, AFP said that they will wait for the CMC to respond on the matter.
