Ramon Magsaysay, ZDS – Corn Farmers who had been problematic for years because of climate change, economic and financial

crisis, and other concern in corn farming is now solve after a modern post harvest and trading center established

and inaugurated this week in Alang. Alang, Ramon Magsaysay, this province.

Ramon Magsaysay is a town in the 1^st district of Zamboanga Del sur with a total land area of 12, 930 hectares of which 1,799 hectares are cornland. Being the 5^th corn producing province in the country, the Department of Agriculture under Secretary Arthur Yap challenged Congressman Victor J Yu to help and avail the PGMA’s “Negosyo sa Sakahan, Laban sa Kahirapan Program” for his district.

“It started after a Regional Development Council meeting when the project was conceptualized and with the support from Governor Aurora Cerilles, Ramon Magsaysay prepares for the project” Mayor Pacifico Bulahan Jr. of corn producing town said.

With the project, the National Agri-business Corporation (NABCOR) was tapped to build the 32-million Corn Post Harvest Processing and Trading Center, the first in the province. As a counterpart, Ramon Magsaysay released 2 million while Congressman Victor J Yu thru his countryside development fund(pork barrel) offered 10 million support fund and the Department of Agriculture released 20 million funding to finish the project.

“The Ramon Magsaysay Corn Grains Center is part of the 15 priority projects of the Arroyo Government in coordination with DA (Department of Agriculture) as corn centers of the country” SP Member Roger Saniel Said.

SP member Saniel ably represents Governor Aurora Enerio Cerilles in the formal opening and inauguration of the 32-M Corn Grains Center. “ I been task to deliver the message of the governor and I know the governor was happy to note that Zamboanga Del Sur will become the Corn Producing province, not the 5^th but the number one province in the country because of this project”. He adds.

Meanwhile, Congressman Victor J Yu who had been supporting the development of his district thru his CDF and personal concerns as the people’s representative is continuing to pour more programs and projects in the development of agriculture in the 1^st District.

“My office had been always campaigning to our farmers to learn and adopt the modern technologies the agriculture department of this country has offered and taught to enhance and uplift their way of living, like the use of organic fertilizer. By then, they are not only economically saving their farming needs but also promotes environmental protection” He said

The 32-M Corn Grain Center now established in Ramon Magsaysay town will surely help the corn farmers of Zamboanga del Sur. Said post harvest facility can produced 200 tons dried corn grits , sacked and marketed thru modern technology.

With the assistance of the Provincial Government, National Agri-Business Corporation (NABCOR), LGU-Ramon Magsaysay with Hon. Pacifico “Jun” Bulahan in command, DA-RFU 9 under the leadership of RD Oscar Parawan and other stakeholders, corn producing Zamboanga Del Sur will now become the center of excellence in corn farming.
