Misamisnons celebrates 2009 Nation’s Week to overcome Poverty

Cagayan de Oro City- led by Governor Oscar S. Moreno, people of Misamis Oriental together with all national and local government offices celebrate and join with this years celebration of the National Week for Overcoming Extreme Poverty (October 17-23) in line with PGMA’s Proclamation No. 717.

With the celebration people from allwalks in life gathered around the provincial capitol to celebrate Activities such as “Kantahan Laban sa Kahirapan”, Medical Outreach conducted by the 4th Infantry Division, Opening of the World Food Day product display, and others were opened to the public.

The observance of the National Week for overcoming extreme Poverty aimed at uniting the support of all sectors of society in the fight against extreme poverty as mandated in the proclamation 717.


Meanwhile, together with the celebration, U.N. Stand Up and Take Action against Poverty (SUTA)(October 16-18) is a three day global campaign intended to provide an opportunity for development partners to gain a deeper understanding of poverty, development and food security issues and actually stand up and take action in support of poverty alleviation and the achievement of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s).


World Food Day (October 16) was also celebrated with this year’s theme, “Achieving Food Security in Times of Crisis” is also a world-wide event designed to increase awareness, understanding and informed year round action to alleviate hunger.


Misamis Oriental as poverty alleviation driven local government does not belong to the country’s 40 poor provinces, however Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental of Northern Mindanao Region belongs to the second twenty provinces that is now given priorities by the national government.

“The two province that belongs to NM region are Lanao Norte and Misamis Occidental,” PA for Northern Mindanao Jojo Pupos said.
