Fair Trade Shop-CDO Opened

Cagayan De Oro City - Today, consumers in Cagayan de Oro City join millions worldwide to support socially and environmentally conscious shopping.

as advocates of this trading scheme which was started by the International Fair Trade Association, 4,000 household from rural and urban por areas will benefit from fair trade shopping, of which in Region 10 alone, 23 producers will also benefited as sales will be generated from those scheme.

What is Fair Trade?

Fair Trade is a global movement, with estimated sales of approximately 5-M US dollars in 2008 averaging growth of 42% in the last two years. It is a proactive poverty alleviation through innovative and high quality Philippine food and handicraft products and provides opportunities to disadvantaged Filipino producers.


FairTrade provides fair and equitable working conditions and helps address climate change, whilst generating profits. and ultimately, seeks to secure the rights of poor people and marginalized communities, develop their livelihood, grow their enterprises.

“It empower ordinary people, build their skills and capacities, while it is also seeks to bring about changes in the rules and practice of conventional trade” says Gabriel Lopez, Chairperson of APFTI.


Meanwhile, Mr. Neil Rafisola, who manage the Salay Homemade Paper Industries,Inc. said that the first Fair Trade Shop in Mindanao will be inaugurated after a press conference held at the VIP Hotel, said that, Cagayan de Oro Fair Trade Shop will provide high regard to consumers as it provides them with safe and quality products that are madder socially and environmentally just conditions.


IFTA or otherwise known as the International Fair Trade Association comes from 300 fair trade organizations from 70 cpuntires of which 65% of its members are based in the south, that is Asia, the Middle East, Africa and South America and with the rest coming from North America and the Pacific Rim and Europe.

From an informal network of distribution channels, fair trade has develop to what is now a network of institutions t5hat operates with extreme sensibilities to the social and environmental impact in production, trading and consumption.

Fair Trade promotes ten standards that will create opportunities for economically disadvantage producers, promotes transparency and accountability, capacity building, it promotes fair trade, payment of a fair price, it has gender equity, health working conditions are availed by workers.

In Fair Trade there is no child labor, it is environmentally friendly and brings fair trade relations with producers.


The opening of the Fair Trade Shop in Cagayan de Oro is an initiative of Advocate of Philippine Fair Trade, Incorporated and the Salay Homemade Paper Industries, Inc.(ShapII) ,it is the second FTS to be opened in Mindanao, the first was in Cebu City.

Vicente Roaring, APFTI Executive Director said that, The opening of the Cagayn de oro Fair trade Shop is critical in APFTI’s development perspective, where we not only to teach a man to fish, but we teach the community to take care of the waters.”


Meantime, APFTI envisions an empowered community of enterpreneuars fighting poverty and contributing to sustainable development through fair trade. APFTI provides business and product development services, advocacy and market access assistance to small and medium community enterprise.
