500 Medical Students undergo Drug test

By PJTremedal

More or less 500 second and third year medical students of the Medina College in this city undergo a random drug testing in coordination with the City PNP and the Zamboanga dekl Sur Medical Center.

In an interview with the City Police Chief Inspector Mike Palermo said that the said drug testing is the outcome of the demand reduction campaign of the city and provincial government against illegal drug and other substances.

“This is what the campaign had transpired especially in the demand reduction program” He said.

Palermo also sighted that the random drug testing pursuant to the CHED and DepED memorandum to safeguard the student populace in all school here in Pagadian and the Zamboanga del Sur as a whole.

However, in the Medina College drug testing, Mrs. Grace Leopoldo, College Administrator said in an interview that, the drug testing is a yearly done in the school, and even their fees are embodied in their school policy especially they are a paramedical school.

“Our school had been doing this to our students” She said. What if there are positive students using Illegal drugs? Mrs Leopoldo further said that if ever they will find out that there are students using these drugs, they will be treated confidentially and parents are called to talk about the problem. She adds.

Meantime, the 500 more or less students underwent a random drug testing using the MET/THC drug testing kit made by the SD Standard Diagnostic Inc. that only cost lesser that the usual drug testing in the private business.

The drug testing was also done in coordination with the city PNP whose job was to help the schools in its acquisition.

“Private Drug testing center cost more , so we have to looked for some measures to accommodate our students from paying higher drug testing fees.” Palermo added.

Random Drug Testing is for the government to act on every school however, with the cost, the government cannot without the help of the parents, with this problem it may be recalled that the City PNP with Chief Inspector Palermo has called upon school owners and administrators in a meeting to talk about the campaign on illegal drugs and other substance and how to face the economic aspects in conducting drug testing.

“This is the first; I thank the administration of Medina College for answering our call and pleas to help us in the illegal drug campaign. And I hope that other schools in the city must also think about the future of their students especially on the menace of this society, the Illegal Drugs. He said.

In the said, drug testing, the provincial Government who had called for a war against illegal drugs send one of its Drug analyst, Mr. Cypher Escobar is a trained drug analyst and undergone a DOJ-PDEA training on methamphetamines and other substances.

“One we are using is a urine based test and this is very sensitive if a person is using or had been in use of the illegal drugs especially methamphetamine hydrochloride or otherwise known as “shabu” or Marijuana. Medical Technologist Escobar disclosed.

Meanwhile, with the city help and initiative, the Medina College drug testing had found two students positive in the use of methamphetamine hydrochloride or otherwise known as “shabu” but the school has treated it confidentially and expected that the said two will be investigated and their parents will be called for proper solution of the findings for future reference and medical attention.

“We will treat this very confidential, we are calling immediately their parents and discuss things, if the school policy will be drastic to this students then we have to act professionally, we don’t want that our school will be tagged and drag to controversies especially on illegal drugs, as we said it first, we are a paramedical school and we are engaged in patients cares. Administrator Leopoldo said.

With the PNP side, Chief Inspector Michael Palermo said that, on the findings the police are here not to apprehend those two, but we will coordinate with the school administration.

“Paanu natin malaman ang isang estudyante kung siya ba ang nadudruga o hindi kung hindi natin ipa drug test.”(In tagalog). I know that this is a very delicate matter to deal with especially on their rights, but we have to do something for their own good and their future.” He said.
