Congressman Ompong Plaza is a child of Mindanao. Just like any Mindanaoan, it was his lifelong dream to achieve peace, development and security in the area. He believes that if only Mindanao shall receive its equitable share in national budget, Mindanao shall be able to maximize its strong potential not only in agriculture but as a strategic economic corridor of the country.
The uniqueness of Mindanao’s position in the Philippine economy has to be advanced as the cornerstone of the National Government’s economic agenda. Emphasis should be given on the promotion of an aggressive program against terrorism, investment in necessary road and transportation systems, research, development and technology transfer on agriculture and education program to promote a cohesive and strong understanding on the dynamics of Mindanaoan culture.
Congressman Ompong Plaza believes that it is incumbent upon all Mindanaoans to encourage strong representation and have their voice heard in the greater national political arena by supporting candidates who genuinely show concern for the plight of Mindanao.
In his latest sortie in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro Cities, Congressman Rodolfo “Ompong” Plaza talks to the local media and made emphasis on Agriculture. He said that when he can seat in the senate after May 2010 election he will surely fight for the reforms in Agriculture.
One of his agenda will be creating the Philippine Orchard Authority in order to help the Filipino Fruit Growers to achieve their dreams. Many farmers opted not to grow fruits because of rich competitors, especially those who are based in Davao province, but with the help and support from the created orchard authority of the country, this will surely help the farmers.
Plaza, who is now a member of the Philippine Guardians Brotherhood, Incorporated, a non-government organization, he challenged them to form a cooperative find an area and plant fruits as their project for livelihood.
“If you can have the area, seedlings will not be a problem, I will help you, I am a farmer too! He said.
Farmers in Mindanao should be supported by the national government because Mindanao can become a food basket in the country given the utmost attention by national leaders. He said that if agriculture will be fully developed and farmers are given adequate support they need, the middle class families will become successful and they will be able to sustain economic growth of the island and even support the food need of the entire country.
“If we have a weak middle class, we cannot sustain economic growth in Mindanao. He said.
Farmers will also fail because there is no adequate support from the government. The farmers should be supported by science and technology so that will succeed every year and experience bountiful harvest in various crops,” he said. Plaza also reiterated that illegal logging should be stopped because this can also contribute to something bad that will happen to the communities.
“We now experience flooding in different parts of the country because there are no more trees to hold the flow of water and also the so-called climate change is now experience by Filipinos,” he said.
Plaza said developing agriculture is one of the best tools that will help Mindanao sustain its economic growth. (With reports from Gerry Gorit/www.ompongplaza.com)
