Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay - A reliable informant who is based in Basilan relayed information on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, that the three (3) kidnapped teachers from Naga, Zamboanga Sibugay were sighted recently in the remote and mountainous areas in Tuburan municipality, province of Basilan .
On conditions of anonymity, a government official who received the call from the informant divulged to Sibugay Express that the group who had taken captive of the three (3) public school teachers from Naga, have already joined with MILF forces based in the said area.
Accordingly, as a result of the pursuit and rescue operations conducted by the police, military and several civilian volunteers led by a former mayor of said town, Usman Lidjal and his group of bandits, who is believed to have taken captive of the Sibugay teachers, have sought refuge and joined the MILF forces allegedly numbering about a hundred armed elements in a mountainous area of Tuburan, Basilan.
The same informant said that allegedly, the group of a cousin of the late Abdusallam Akkiden also known as Commander Kiddie, was responsible for the kidnapping of the three (3) teachers in Bankaw-bankaw, Naga, Zamboanga Sibugay on March 13, 2009. The teachers were later brought to Basilan and were turned over to the group of Usman Lidjal.
The kidnappers then demanded for a PhP 10 million in exchange for the release of the teachers. But the insistence of the Provincial Crisis Committee of the province of Sibugay to abide with the no-ransom policy of the government and not to negotiate with any ransom demand from the kidnappers prompted the kidnappers to reduce the ransom to PhP 300,000.00 representing as payment for ‘board and lodging’ of the 3 teachers.
Meanwhile, Asec. Crisanto “Monsi” B. Dela Cruz, Presidential Assistant for Western Mindanao , corroborated the information that the captive teachers from Zamboanga Sibugay are now in Basilan. In an interview with Sibugay Express, Asec De la Cruz said that he received reports that the three (3) teachers from Sibugay province are believed to be in Basilan, but he did not specify which particular place in the province. He further said that he has no knowledge whether or not they were joined with the three (3) other teachers and one (1) businessman who were also kidnapped in Zamboanga City and were brought to Basilan.
Asec. Dela Cruz further averred that he received specific instructions from Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita to closely monitor the rescue operations in Basilan. He reiterated the government’s no-ransom policy on kidnapping.

Naga teachers hesitant to go back to teaching posts
Public school teachers who are assigned in the public elementary schools in barangays Bankaw-bankaw, Mamagon and Kalintana all of Naga municipality, are now hesitant to report to their teaching jobs as the opening of classes on June nears.
Fearing that they might suffer the same fate as with their three (3) colleagues who were abducted last March 13, 2009 in Bankaw-bankaw, Naga, the teachers, who are mostly Christians, said that their jobs now have become very risky. Unless assured of their safety, the teachers will go back to their assigned posts, it was gathered.
Bankaw-bankaw, Mamagon and Kalintana are remote barangays in Naga municipality which are believed to be lairs of pirates, bandits and Muslim separatist rebels.
It can be recalled that on March 13, 2009 three (3) public school teachers were abducted while on their way home aboard a pumpboat from Bankaw-bankaw elementary school. A fourth teacher was spared by the abductors because she was a Muslim. Until now, the teachers are still with their captors and are believed to be in Basilan province.
Mrs. Fe Mejico, Principal II and District Supervisor of Naga District, lamented to Sibugay Express her dilemma as she said that once the teachers won’t report for work during the opening of classes, the remaining teachers will be overloaded with work because they will handle the sections or classes that will be left behind by the Christian teachers.
