Camp Blog to Usher in Potential of Digital Learning in Public High School Education

One hundred forty four of the most promising public high school students and teachers nationwide will converge at the Mimosa Leisure Estate in Clark Field, Pampanga for the first Camp Blog conference from May 18-28, 2009.

The 10-day affair will equip a new generation of students and teachers with a practical appreciation of the benefits and relevance of digital learning. To this end, Camp Blog will initiate hostilities with technical sessions to help frame high school education in light of advancements in 21^st century digital learning.

Participants will be then divided into 12 lecture-discussion tracks, representing the major subjects taught in public high schools, namely; Math, Science, English, Filipino, Social Science, History, ICT Technology, Livelihood Entrepreneurship, Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health. Discussion in these subject areas will be led by foremost experts in each field. After which, participants are expected to have developed content for their assigned track.

Camp Blog will then transition into equipping participants with the necessary skills to best position their content for online consumption. Among these include online research and writing for the new media, such as online video/photo journalism and blogging.

The event is envisioned as an annual reinforcement activity to the iSchools Project by, “remaining consistent with the Project’s credo of bridging the digital divide,” states Antonette Torres, Project Manager of the iSchools Project.

Torres asserts that Camp Blog will achieve this through “the convergence of the best of traditional learning content requirements encountered in public high school education with the promise that digital learning modes afford.”

Camp Blog will be open to all students and teachers of the 360 public high schools who were previous recipients of the iSchools Project. Participant selection is competitive. Each successful applicant will have to demonstrate the necessary English proficiency through an online examination required by the iSchools Project.

The iSchools Project is a flagship initiative of the Commission on Information and Communication Technology - Human Capital Development Group (CICT-HCDG). The project aims to integrate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education, by providing training modules and increasing ICT access in the public high school sector. To date, the iSchools Project has endowed 360 computer laboratories across the Philippines.

2009 Palarong Pambansa in Leyte promises high tech, higher level of competition

The Palarong Pambansa, the country’s biggest sports event which opens on April 27 to May 2, promises a higher level of competition and the full use of technology in delivering real time games results to the spectators.

The Department of Education said that whatever is the latest in the international standards of sports events, it will be applied in the Palaro in Leyte, in line with DepEd’s thrust to continue to raise the level of competition as well as the management of the Palaro.

DepEd will make full use of ICT in ensuring that the public is updated on the results of the games. Immediately after each event is played, the results may be viewed on-line especially by those who cannot be at the venue. Wide screen projectors will also be installed in strategic areas.

Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla and the other provincial officials of Leyte saw to it that the athletes will have a good venue for the Palaro 2009.

The venue of the Palaro is the newly refurbished Leyte Sports Development Center in Tacloban City, Leyte and the results of the events will be viewed by the spectators through the local television and heard by the public through a private and government radio stations.

The result of the games could also be read at various websites which include http://depedtfss.wikispaces.com; leyte.gov.org; and pia.8.tk.

About 15,000 athletes and school officials from 17 delegations representing public and private elementary and secondary schools all over the country will see action in the week-long sporting event which is hosted by the Provincial Government of Leyte and the Department of Education Region 8.

Director Sol F. Matugas said there will be 17 events for the secondary level and 14 events for the primary level.

The athletes competing in the Palaro emerged from the elimination round in regional athletics meets held months and weeks before the grand Palaro.

The Province of Leyte is providing the venues and facilities for the Palaro. On the other hand, DepEd handles the technical management of the Palaro including the procurement of technical equipment needed for the events.

DepEd is ensuring the integrity of the games by conducting reorientation of the chairs in the screening committees in the district, division and regional levels so that they will be updated on the rules for screening and accreditation of athletes.

ZamboSur PNP heightens Red Alert on OPLAN “Semana Santa”

Camp Abelon, Pagadian City – The Christian community, particularly the Roman Catholic Church nation-wide will observe the annual religious activities of the Lenten Season or otherwise locally known as “Semana Santa”.

Said religious act ivies falls on February 25, 2009 (Ash Wednesday) up to Easter Sunday celebrations on April 12, 2009. Morning and evening Masses, Novenas, Processions and Stations of the Cross on Good Friday are to be celebrated and expected to be participated by the public and other visitors.

The provincial directorate under PNP Provincial Director P/SSUPT Ramon M. Ochotorena, concurrent with its statutory mission and functions through its operating units from the City Police and the twenty-seven(27) Municipal PNP Stations, the 905^th and the 906^th Provincial Mobile Groups in close coordination with the AFP units and other religious groups and leaders ensures a peaceful observation of this year’s Lenten season by providing a heighten red alert security measures to include appropriate actions on all public places such as churches, terminals, airports, and seaports.

“Lawless elements such as Abu Sayaf Groups, the SPGS, MBGs and the CPP-NPA as assumed will conduct terroristic operations to disrupt the celebration like conducting bombings in churches, attacks or harassed PNP/AFP Detachments/checkpoints, kidnapping of top religious leaders and other hostile-related activities in order to create chaos, terrorism, fear, panic to the populace and at the same time embarrassed the national government specifically our forces and other law enforcement agencies and the local government officials.” PD Ochotorena said.

The heighten Red Alert Status is pursuant to the Provincial Command OPLAN “Lenten Season 2009”, Memorandum received from PNP Regional Office 9, and the PNP Master Plan for Security Preparations and Coverage or PNP Sang-Ingat Bravo per Letter of Instruction(LOI) 68/2008.

“Police visibilities, and assigning operatives in all churches, routes of the Station of the Cross, and conduct mobile check points all of the municipalities in Zamboanga Del Sur will be our part and commitment in the observance of the “Semana Santa.” PD Ochotorena added.

PNP-PAIDSOTF Strikes Anew

Pagadian City – As the police heightens its alert on the Lenten Season, Local authorities led by the PNP Provincial Directorship and the newly created Provincial Anti Drugs Special Operation Task Force (PAIDSOTF) strike anew to its mission.

A certain Dindo Eslit, 26 years old, a resident of Tadlao, Bagong Silao, Dumalinao, ZDS was apprehended and caught by the operatives of the PAIDSOTF under Police Senior Inspector Rommel Gabriel Etbew in one of the district this city.

The suspect was collared thru a buy bust operations and confiscated from him (Eslit) eight (8) pcs sachet of crystallized substances believed to be “shabu”, three (3) rolled foils of Aluminum, and two(2) lighters used in as paraphernalia’s in sniffing the dangerous drugs.

He is now temporarily locked-up in the Camp Abelon locked-up cell for appropriate filing of charges violating R.A. 9165 or otherwise known as the Dangerous Drug Act of 2002.

Meanwhile, the 905^th Provincial Mobile Group under Police Chief Inspector Alikhan Yusop, Group Director has intensified its campaign on drug proliferation in his area of responsibility. Late this week another two (2) suspects in the illegal drug business.

One Usudan Lida y Sultan, 30 years old, a resident of Malabang, Lanao del Sur and one Rico Gallardo Y Pelaje, 36 years old, a resident of Sta Lucia, this city was apprehended and confiscated from them three(3) sachet of suspected shabu, eight(8) aluminum foils, and two(2) lighters as shabu paraphernalia’s. The duo was collared after a buy bust operations conducted by the operatives of the 905^th PMG PNP and now charged in the violation of R.A. 9165.

In related development, a Habal-habal driver was caught red handed with the illegal substances as it was noticed in the check point conducted by the 906^th PNP Provincial Mobile Group in San Miguel town.

In the police report confirmed that, SPO4 Carlito Tianchon of the 906^th PNP PMG under the supervision of Police Chief Inspector Romulo Nicholas Suarez, team leader has initiated a “No travel no policy” check point in San Miguel, when a certain Romeo Cornel Y Gutual, 39 years old, Married, an Habal-habal driver of Margosatubig was flagged down by the police operatives to check on him.

In the conduct of the inspection when the driver was asked on his driver’s license, a plastic package falls from his possession, and when the other police operatives in the checkpoint, PO3 Albert Albios and PO2 Michael Maguindra noticed the package and when they opened it suspected sachets of the illegal drugs were immediately confiscated from the suspects and they brought him in the 906^th PNP PMG Headquarters in San Miguel and found out, two(2) sachet of crystallize white substance believed to be shabu pack on a plastic sealed package, One(1) big and one(1) small plastic package containing the said substance.

This prompted the 906^th PMG Operatives to bring the suspect to Camp Abelon for proper disposition and filed him charges violating section 11 of R.A. 9165 and violating R.A. 4136. The suspect was driving a black Bajaj/Kawasaki Motorcycle with plate number JPT183 Motorcycle without pertinent papers.

“We will be intensifying more on the campaign on Illegal drugs.” Provincial Director P/SSUPT Ramon Ochotorena said.
