Misamisnons celebrates 2009 Nation’s Week to overcome Poverty

Cagayan de Oro City- led by Governor Oscar S. Moreno, people of Misamis Oriental together with all national and local government offices celebrate and join with this years celebration of the National Week for Overcoming Extreme Poverty (October 17-23) in line with PGMA’s Proclamation No. 717.

With the celebration people from allwalks in life gathered around the provincial capitol to celebrate Activities such as “Kantahan Laban sa Kahirapan”, Medical Outreach conducted by the 4^th Infantry Division, Opening of the World Food Day product display, and others were opened to the public.

The observance of the National Week for overcoming extreme Poverty aimed at uniting the support of all sectors of society in the fight against extreme poverty as mandated in the proclamation 717.

Meanwhile, together with the celebration, U.N. Stand Up and Take Action against Poverty (SUTA)(October 16-18) is a three day global campaign intended to provide an opportunity for development partners to gain a deeper understanding of poverty, development and food security issues and actually stand up and take action in support of poverty alleviation and the achievement of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s).

World Food Day (October 16) was also celebrated with this year’s theme, “Achieving Food Security in Times of Crisis” is also a world-wide event designed to increase awareness, understanding and informed year round action to alleviate hunger.

Misamis Oriental as poverty alleviation driven local government does not belong to the country’s 40 poor provinces, however Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental of Northern Mindanao Region belongs to the second twenty provinces that is now given priorities by the national government.

“The two province that belongs to NM region are Lanao Norte and Misamis Occidental,” PA for Northern Mindanao Jojo Pupos said.

DENR intensifies implementation of PRS92 in Zamboanga Peninsula

Pagadian City – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Regional Office IX is now intensifying the implementation of the so-called Philippine Reference System (PRS) of 1992 primarily aimed to provide better user access to geodetic network information.

Under this program, DENR plans to upgrade the current geodetic control database into a web-based Geodetic Network Information System (GNIS) that will eventually have both central and regional operations. The establishment of continuously operating reference stations, generally known as Active Geodetic Stations (AGS) is also being envisioned to expedite the densification work and provide real time positioning services to users communities.

PRS92 is a homogenous national network of geodetic control points (GCPs), marked by survey monuments or mojons, that have been established using the Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. GPS is an all- weather, high precision, global satellite positioning system that revolutionized navigation and surveying operations.

By virtue of EO 45, PRS92 became the standard reference system for all surveying and mapping activities in the Philippines.

PRS92 was first implemented through EO 45 under the administration of former President Fidel Ramos. Subsequently, it was amended by EO 280 extending its full implementation by 2005. In order to complete the adoption and integration of the old surveys into a system until 2010, EO 321 was issued by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Under EO 321, the National Mapping Research and Information Authority (NAMRIA), Lands Management Bureau and the DENR Regional Operations Committees are tasked to primarily execute the order. DENR Regional Executive Director Maximo Dichoso through the Regional Public Affairs Office (RPAO) is now conducting information education campaign throughout the region and to come up with a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Local Government Units (LGUs) and DENR.

The network or system is extensive wherein an average of three (3) geodetic control points (GCPs) shall be installed in every barangay with an interval of five (5) kilometers from each point. With about 42,000 barangays in the whole country, the total requirements of GCPs will sum up to approximately 126,000. With this, all adjusted old maps and surveys are also integrated into the new network.

According to Mr. Roservirico “Obing” Tan, RPAO Officer in Charge, as of the moment there are 24 local government units (1 City and 23 Municipalities) in the region who have signed the agreement with DENR since 2007. (PIA RO9)

Consortium of Bangsanoro Society and UFS condemns Fr. Sinnot Kidnapping

Pagadian City – With active participation in the InterFAITH movement in this city, the Ummah Fi Salam injoins the Consortium of the Bangsamoro Society,Inc. – RMC condemns the kidnapping of Fr. Michael Sinnot a Columban Father and peace advocate who founded the Hangop Kabataan Foundation, an institution catering the needs of special children yesterday (October 11, 2009).

“It is an act against the morality of Islam,” UFS said.

The Muslim community in Pagadian City laments the kidnapping of Irish priest Fr. Michael Sinnot by six unidentified armed men on the night of October 11, 2009 inside the Columban House in Pagadian City.

This act is against the morality of Islam. In solidarity, we join our Christian brethren s in strongly condemning this act. We also pray for his safety and immediate release.

Even as we say this we also appeal for calmness and sobriety and ask that we work together in solidarity for the early and unconditional release of Fr. Sinnot.

As a peace advocate, Fr. Sinnot, a Columban missionary priest is the founder of Hangop Kabataan Foundation who caters to the needs of disadvantaged children. He is also a respected member of the Interfaith Forum for Solidarity and Peace in Pagadian City, an organization of religious and concern Christians, Muslims and Subanens, who had contributed a lot in bridging understanding and peace building.

PPOC calls for an emergency meeting.

Led by its chairwoman, Governor Auring Cerilles has called its members in the ZDS Provincial Peace and Order Council to plan what has to be done being the crisis management on the recent kidnapping of Fr. Michael Sinnot of the Hangop Kabataan Foundation.

Likewise condemning the kidnapping of the founder of a foundation working and catering the needs of special children in Zamboanga Peninsula.

Hangop Kabataan Priest Kidnap!

Pagadian City – An Irish national priest was kidnap by more or less 6 armed men believed to be MILF members October 11 at 7:pm here in this city.

Father Michael Sinnot, 79 years old, a by-passed (heart) patient, and prime mover of the Hangop Kabataan, Inc. an NGO that help and support special children was forcibly kidnap by six armed men in his resident and bring him in Darusalam, Sta Lucia District in a mini-white van and escape riding a motorized banca after putting fire to the said mini van.

In a police update, Pagadian Police Chief, P/Chief Inspector Michael Palermo in a text message, confirmed the incident and believed that the suspects are members of the Lawless MILF group.

“We are now fully investigating the said kidnapping of Father Sinnot” Palermo in his text message.

Meanwhile in a radio interview with Bombo Radio, Monsignor Elmer Abacahin of the Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) confirmed that (October 11,2009) Father Michael Sinnot was kidnapped by armed men inside his residence and bring him aboard a motorized banca to an unknown direction believed to be a forested areas within the boundary of Lanao and Zamboanga Sibugay, Msgr Abacahin related also to the radio, that if you can recall of the Father Mossi incident is the same to what had happened with Father Sinnot.

“Yes, If you can recall (in the interview) of the Father Mossi incident few years back, it is the same of the kidnapping of Father Sinnot” He said.

Father Sinnot who had a by-passed surgery was inside the compound when a man entering and ask the father’s house-help whether he is around. And when the house help said, yes, 3-4 armed men forcibly enter and warned them not to say anything or otherwise they will be harmed.

After they get Father Sinnot, they immediately get away on board a mini-white van and proceeded to the coastal area and escape, but some witnesses said that before they ride on board the motorized banca, the armed men put into fire the mini-van and escape riding the motorized banca.

Monsignor Abacahin told, Bombo Radio that they were informed after the incident by Monsignor Manuel Cabajar, Archbishop of the Diocese of Pagadian about the kidnapping.

Farther, the CBCP announced that the denounce the kidnapping of Father Sinnot, and a no ransom policy if the suspects will try to negotiate for the immediate release, but as of press time, no one claimed responsibility of the kidnapping, however as Pagadian PNP is now fully investigating said incident allege that rouge elements from the Lawless MILF Group (LMG) are there suspects in the kidnapping of Father Michael Sinnot.

Cagayan De Oro City - Today, consumers in Cagayan de Oro City join millions worldwide to support socially and environmentally conscious shopping.

as advocates of this trading scheme which was started by the International Fair Trade Association, 4,000 household from rural and urban por areas will benefit from fair trade shopping, of which in Region 10 alone, 23 producers will also benefited as sales will be generated from those scheme.

What is Fair Trade?

Fair Trade is a global movement, with estimated sales of approximately 5-M US dollars in 2008 averaging growth of 42% in the last two years. It is a proactive poverty alleviation through innovative and high quality Philippine food and handicraft products and provides opportunities to disadvantaged Filipino producers.

FairTrade provides fair and equitable working conditions and helps address climate change, whilst generating profits. and ultimately, seeks to secure the rights of poor people and marginalized communities, develop their livelihood, grow their enterprises.

“It empower ordinary people, build their skills and capacities, while it is also seeks to bring about changes in the rules and practice of conventional trade” says Gabriel Lopez, Chairperson of APFTI.

Meanwhile, Mr. Neil Rafisola, who manage the Salay Homemade Paper Industries,Inc. said that the first Fair Trade Shop in Mindanao will be inaugurated after a press conference held at the VIP Hotel, said that, Cagayan de Oro Fair Trade Shop will provide high regard to consumers as it provides them with safe and quality products that are madder socially and environmentally just conditions.

IFTA or otherwise known as the International Fair Trade Association comes from 300 fair trade organizations from 70 cpuntires of which 65% of its members are based in the south, that is Asia, the Middle East, Africa and South America and with the rest coming from North America and the Pacific Rim and Europe.

From an informal network of distribution channels, fair trade has develop to what is now a network of institutions t5hat operates with extreme sensibilities to the social and environmental impact in production, trading and consumption.

Fair Trade promotes ten standards that will create opportunities for economically disadvantage producers, promotes transparency and accountability, capacity building, it promotes fair trade, payment of a fair price, it has gender equity, health working conditions are availed by workers.

In Fair Trade there is no child labor, it is environmentally friendly and brings fair trade relations with producers.

The opening of the Fair Trade Shop in Cagayan de Oro is an initiative of Advocate of Philippine Fair Trade, Incorporated and the Salay Homemade Paper Industries, Inc.(ShapII) ,it is the second FTS to be opened in Mindanao, the first was in Cebu City.

Vicente Roaring, APFTI Executive Director said that, The opening of the Cagayn de oro Fair trade Shop is critical in APFTI’s development perspective, where we not only to teach a man to fish, but we teach the community to take care of the waters.”

PGMA TO INAGUARATE 379.46-M PAGADIAN AIRPORT

Pagadian City – President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is set to visit Pagadian City and two municipalities of Zamboanga del Sur today, October 9, 2009.

The President and her party are expected to arrive at 10:00 am to inaugurate the runway of the P379.46 million Pagadian City Airport Development Project.

Frm the airport, she will chopper to the municipality of Josefina for “PCSO’s Common Tao Day”, where PCSO will provide free medical, dental and eye-check up to indigent families.

In Josefina, the President is expected to personally meet the 14 barangay captains and distribute medical kits and assistance to patients/beneficiaries.

From Josefina, the President will motor to Brgy. Lourmah in Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur for the rice milestone event. There she will earmark the 15 million cavans of palay bought at P17.50 per kilo. A ceremonial buying of palay from farmers through DA-NFA will then take place. Shortly after, she will interact with the farmers before proceeding to Brgy. San Isidro Central School for the Briefing on Climate Change and Solid Waste Management.

The floods, landslides and other devastation to life and property brought about by typhoon “Ondoy”, “Pepeng” and “Quedan” confront us with the reality of Global Warming and its ill-effects and challenges each one to do his share.

Relative to this, the Philippine Information Agency, Regional Office IX, in coordination with the Department of Science and Technology and Department of Environment and Natural Resources have conducted a series of fora to make people aware of its dangers and ill-effects.

PIA also enjoined media practitioners to help in the campaign being a very powerful tool and effective medium to disseminate information, thereby generating action from every concerned citizen. They pledged their all-out support to this worthy endeavor.

Yesterday(October 8), the President was the guest speaker during the Chamber of Realtors and Builders Association (CREBA) in Grand Caprice, Limketkai, Cagayan de Oro City.

In Josefina, PGMA joins ‘Common Tao Day’ celebration

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will spearhead also in the ‘Common Tao Day’ celebration today in Josefina, Zamboanga a 6^th class town in the province of Zamboanga del Sur. This is a day of celebration, where ordinary folks will enjoy an extraordinary day with the Chief Executive.

It is a celebration of hope, confidence, empowerment and approval by the common tao of the services their government provides for them.

On this day, the Office of the President through the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) will provide medical, dental and optical services to beneficiaries. PCSO symbolizes hope for the common tao and under the Arroyo administration; it has more than tripled its resources and charity funds for indigents and common folks alike. This has generated confidence among the poor in their government’s concern for them.

At the press conference held at the Philippine Information Agency Regional Office here, PCSO Regional Lottery Officer Raul Regondola said that during the ‘Common Tao Day’ 1,500 patients from Josefina town are expected to benefit from the medical-dental mission as well as eye check-up. Eye glasses will also be provided for free, Regondola added.

Several persons with disability (PWDs) will also be given wheel chairs and a patient who is undergoing dialysis will also be given medical assistance by no less than the President herself.

Earlier, 86 Barangay Health Workers (BHWs), Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS), Barangay Service Point Officers (BSPOs) and Day Care Workers were oriented and are now ready to serve as “Kaibigan ng PCSO, Kaibigan ng Common Tao” Volunteer Program. These Kaibigans will serve as PCSO’s primary information and service persons in the barangays. Whenever the common tao seeks assistance, they can approach the Kaibigans, Regondola stressed.
